This week was full of work, since I’ll be off next week. Unfortunately, that didn’t leave much time for me to update you. So, here’s what’s happened since my previous post.
Despite my best efforts to have a cancer appointment-free week, I did end up with a genetics appointment on Thursday. We traveled to a hospital in DC to meet with the geneticist. I was so glad we brought my scooter! It was our first time taking it out anywhere (besides around the neighborhood). The hospital is sprawling and we had to make our way through four different buildings, so the scooter saved the day.
The genetics appointment was fairly quick. The geneticist explained the different cancer-related genes and a little bit about how they work. I don’t expect for genetic issues to turn up but I didn’t expect the cancer, either. So, we figure it’s better to check. The geneticist had me spit in a tube until I reached the fill line. Then, she packaged up my test for shipping. It’ll take about two weeks to get results.
I also received the cost estimate for my surgery this week. Yesterday, in fact. All I can say is thank goodness for half-decent insurance. I feel so badly for folks in this position who don’t have decent insurance. $30k for my partial mastectomy (lumpectomy). And presumably that’s based on the rates negotiated with my insurance company. 😮
Three days until surgery.
